PRESENTING The Brothers Grimm: Out of Order

On January 10th, the Artistic Moment's Theatre Geeks will be performing an upbeat, one-act comedy that brings the Grimm Brothers to a modern day high school theatre department.

Performances will be held at New Horizon Theatre in downtown West Point, GA at 2pm and at 7pm.
Tickets are General Admission and only $5 each.

Don't miss The Brothers Grimm: Out of Order, written by Flip Kobler and Cindy Marcus!

Brothers Jake and Will Grimm battle over a script for their high school theatre department, with Jake inserting blood and strife among Will's fluffy bunnies and happy endings.
The result is a mix-up of your favorite fairy tales, thrown together in a rush performance to save their theatre department from a take-over by the football team. Sit back and enjoy the chaos as Prince Charming rescues Rapunzel, who ends up falling in love with Hansel, following his escape from the evil witch Cinderella. Even Jorinda and Joringel join the show, but crash Cinderella's story when no one remembers their fairy tale. When the principal arrives to see the show, the six minute and twelve second performance is nothing short of hysterical.

Each month of this unique calendar features a scene from a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm.   Costuming was designed in the style Steampunk and provides a new look for classic tales, such as Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood.  The settings were all locations in Troup County, Georgia and included Fort Tyler, the West Point Woman’s Club, West Point Lake, Hawkes Library, and Bishom Manor in LaGrange.

As a part of our efforts to promote artistic opportunities in our rural area, we began holding creative writing workshops for aspiring young authors, also known as Word Artists.  We meet at Hawkes Library in West Point, Georgia and have members from across Troup County, as well as Chambers County in Alabama.  Our Word Artists incorporate a wealth of artistic talents and creativity into each of their projects and goals.  Their latest adventure was the creation of A 2015 Grimm Calendar.

Proceeds from the calendar sales will help provide the necessary resources for the group’s ambitious goals. We anticipate their first publications to be released in May 2015 and also plan to create a program designed to bring Word Artists into local schools, advocating literacy and promoting an interest in creative writing.

The generosity of many local sponsors made this project a possibility.  As the primary sponsor of the calendar and the home of the Youth Writing Workshop, Hawkes Library and the Friends of Hawkes Library have provided much support for this program and its members.  Hooked on Art, in conjunction with David and Becky Guinn, donated most of the costuming used. The fairy-tale environment of Bisham Manor offered the perfect backdrop for a number of stories told. The West Point Woman’s Club provided additional settings and have supported the writing program from its beginning. Additional sponsorsinclude Papadolly’s Boutique, West Point Soap, Eagle 102.3, We Print Ink, Blue Train Books of Hogansville, ProAudio Georgia, Timeless Antiques, Kitchen Cupboard, El Jimador, Celitic Traditons of Auburn, David’s Automotive, Prime Time Restaurant, Attorney Julianne Lynn, Kellie Hubbard of Premier Designs Jewelry, Girl Scout Troop 5165, and numerous private sponsors.

The photography and design services for the project were provided by Amy McDow, who also facilitates the workshops.  You can view more of her artwork at www.amymcdow.com.

The West Point Woman’s Club’s Artistic Moments Cafe, returns on Friday, July 11th, from 6:30 to 8:30pm ET.
The featured visual artist for this month is Becky Guinn, joined by performing artist, Corbin Hoats.

Becky Guinn is a life-long artist, who began specializing in watercolor painting after the loss of her arms and legs in 2003.  After retiring from teaching art at Valley High School, she began a non-profit program, Hooked On Art, which took art into schools across Alabama.  She continues to be an inspirational speaker at venues throughout the country and her artwork can be viewed on her website at www.beckyguinn.org

Live music will be provided by Corbin Hoats, who has established an eclectic repertoire that can be enjoyed by a wide variety of fans.  He plays at venues in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee and has quickly become a local favorite.  In addition to classic favorites, he also writes original music and adds his unique sound to cover versions of popular songs.

Local professional artists will continue to share their artwork and talents with our community on the second Friday evening of each month.  Young artists will be guests at similar events on the fourth Friday of each month.  To see more about the Cafe’s featured artists or for more information and schedules of upcoming events, visit: www.artisticmoments.org.

Admission to the Artistic Moments Cafe, on July 11th, is $5 per person and includes coffee and dessert.  The event will be located at the West Point Woman’s Clubhouse on 6th Avenue, across from Fort Tyler.  Entertainment will last from 6:30 to 8:30pm ET and guests are invited to drop in at any time.

Youth Writer’s Workshop at Hawkes Library

Introducing a new workshop, designed to enhance students’ writing skills and offer them all of the resources necessary to write and self-publish a book.

The workshop will be held on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of each month at Historic Hawkes Library in West Point, GA.  A class for younger participants, starting at age 7, will last from 1:30 to 2:30pm ET.  A class for more advanced writers will last from 3:00 to 4:30pm ET.  The fee for the workshop is $20 per month.  Financial aid and family discounts are available.  The maximum class size is twelve students.

Meetings will consist of:
  • -  instructional lessons and tips to enhance writing skills
  • -  ideas for creative journal writing
  • -  a forum for peer reviews, critiques, and constructive criticism

easy access to resources, and additional encouragement and motivation between meetings

Although it is not required, members of the workshop are encouraged to complete a work and submit it for publication. Due to the additional expense of the publication process, local sponsors or fundraisers may be available for financial assistance.

Publication Resources include:
  • - proofreading
    - constructive criticism and peer reviews
    - cover design services
    - assistance with illustrations, if needed
    - assistance with formatting the student’s work for submission
    - guidance through all of the steps necessary to submit a book for self-publication

If published, the participant will have their work printed in paperback form, including a unique ISBN for their publication. There will also be an option to distribute the book to national bookstores, both brick & mortar and online. Digital editions may also be developed. In addition, Hawkes will offer new authors a wonderful place to hold their first book signing.

All workshops will be held at the historic Hawkes Library in West Point, GA. The literature and resource materials available are complimented by computers for student use and Wi-Fi access.  A variety of work and seating options, throughout the building and around its exterior, make this the perfect location for these meetings.

Book Break! is planned for the 2015-2016 School Year.  As our young authors complete the publication process, they will have the opportunity to join the Book Break! program. This will involve travel to local schools where the authors will read their book (or excepts from their book) to students. They will then talk about their experiences with writing and encourage students to continue reading and writing. Book signings can also be held at the schools when visited.

For more information or to register for the program, please contact Amy McDow (amy@amymcdow.com or 706-407-1210).

What a great night!

Our first Artistic Moments Cafe took place last Friday and we could not have asked for a better evening.  Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time and we are thrilled with how many people encouraged us to repeat the event again.

Thea McElvy's artwork was stunning and managed to impress every guest that attended.  It was so fun to be surrounded by creative and colorful portraits of Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson, Shirley Temple, and more.

Corbin Hoats entertained all of us with his musical talent and created the perfect environment for everyone to enjoy the night.

Guests were able to visit with friends and meet new members of our community, while indulging in coffee and desserts.  The West Point Woman's Club offered a perfect location for the event and we are looking forward to the next Artistic Moments Cafe, scheduled for July 11th!

Introducing Artistic Moments Cafe!

In an effort to bring more opportunities for artists to showcase their talents and to provide our community with more opportunities to enjoy art locally, we are introducing the Artistic Moments Cafe.

This Friday, on June 13th, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm EDT, we welcome Thea McElvy and Corbin Hoats as our guest artists.  Thea will be showing her latest line of artwork for the first time to the public.  The vibrant colors and familiar subjects portrayed have already caused much anticipation among her fans.  Corbin Hoats is fast becoming one of community's favorite performers.  His eclectic mix of genres and his unique style of music never fails to entertain his audiences.

Admission is $5 per person and includes coffee and dessert.  Guests are welcome to come and go from 6:30pm to 8:30pm or join us for the entire event.

Each month, we plan to transform the West Point Woman's Clubhouse into a "coffee house," featuring both visual and performing artists.  Plan to join us on the second Friday of each month as we host a variety of talent, in an atmosphere designed for relaxation and creativity.

On the fourth Friday of each month, we will feature the work and talents of student artists.  On June 27th, we will be enjoying the Performing Arts Camp Showcase at New Horizon Theatre, in lieu of having an event at the Clubhouse.

The next Cafe is scheduled for July 11th with visual artist, Becky Guinn, and our performing artist is to be announced once schedules are confirmed.

If you are interested in participating as an artist in one of these events, please contact Amy McDow for more information.  Scheduling is in progress now for the remainder of the year.

The West Point Woman's Club is a proud supporter of the Arts and are graciously providing their facilities for this endeavor.  The Friends of Hawkes Library and New Horizon Theatre are also sponsors and supporters of this project.
